If you are a hopeful single parent, or a couple with no sperm who is planning to use frozen sperm to become pregnant, there is one big reason you should consider intrauterine insemination (IUI) rather than simply placing the thawed frozen sperm in the vagina. What is it? It’s that thawed, frozen sperm does not live nearly as long as fresh sperm. Fresh sperm can live 3-5 days but thawed frozen sperm only live 12-24 hours. Unless these sperm are placed as close to the fallopian tubes as possible, chances of becoming pregnant are far less! Even if you don’t have any fertility issues personally, you are more likely to get pregnant doing IUI simply because the sperm are more likely to live long enough to reach the egg when they are placed in the uterus.
